Context & problem
BEST Insights supports air traffic control training through session analysis and replay, with integrated instructor feedback. The interface needed to make rich training data understandable and support review across devices, for both on-site and remote learning.
My contribution
During my internship at Micro Nav Ltd, I was the sole UI/UX designer on BEST Insights. I worked with the Product Manager on concept designs, user flows, visual design and high-fidelity Figma prototypes, connecting product requirements with the development team.
Process
I began by working through the requirements with the Product Manager and exploring concept designs. After reviewing those directions together, I developed the overall visual theme and the detail of individual tools.
I organised the project in Figma, giving each tool its own page. This made it possible to work through the designs with the Product Manager while keeping the broader application consistent.
Design decisions
The work moved from early concepts to detailed prototypes so that individual flows could be reviewed in context. Organising Figma around each tool kept the discussions focused, while a shared visual theme connected the different parts of the application.
The aim was a clear, usable interface for complex training information, aligned with the product objectives and the needs of instructors.

Outcome
The work produced concept designs, an application theme and high-fidelity prototypes for BEST Insights. My contribution brought product and development together around a concrete set of interface designs and user flows.
This experience continues to inform my engineering work: make a complex workflow understandable, use prototypes to clarify decisions, and keep the people using the system in view.
Later recognition
In 2024, Micro Nav won the Aviation Innovation Award – Medium at the UK Aviation Awards for its work on BEST Insights. The award was received after I had left Micro Nav, following my UI/UX design internship in 2023.
